The MILD Technique: How to Induce Lucid Dreams

MILD — Mnemonic Induction of Lucid Dreams — is one of the most studied lucid-dreaming techniques. Here’s how it works and how to do it, step by step.

MILD stands for Mnemonic Induction of Lucid Dreams. Developed by lucid-dreaming researcher Stephen LaBerge, it uses prospective memory — the same mental skill you use to remember to do something later — to set a firm intention to recognize when you're dreaming.

It's one of the best-studied induction methods, and research by Aspy and colleagues (2017) found it meaningfully raises the odds of a lucid dream, especially when you fall back asleep quickly after practicing it.

How to do MILD

  1. Wake from a dream. MILD works best after about five hours of sleep, when REM periods are long. Wake gently — ideally right after a dream — and recall it clearly.
  2. Set the intention. As you lie down to return to sleep, repeat to yourself, with real meaning: "Next time I'm dreaming, I'll remember that I'm dreaming."
  3. Rehearse becoming lucid. Picture yourself back in the dream you just had. Imagine noticing a dream sign, realizing you're dreaming, and becoming lucid inside it.
  4. Fall asleep on the thought. Let the intention be the last thing in your mind. If other thoughts intrude, gently return to the phrase and the visualization.

Why it works

You're training your brain to remember to notice — planting a trigger that fires inside the dream. The visualization makes the intention concrete, so recognition feels rehearsed rather than random.

Tips for success

  • Fall back asleep fast. The single strongest predictor of MILD working is returning to sleep within about five minutes. Keep the lights low and screens away.
  • Combine it with WBTB. Doing MILD during a brief Wake-Back-to-Bed window is far more effective than at the start of the night.
  • Keep building recall. MILD relies on a recent dream to rehearse with, so strong dream recall makes everything easier.

Be patient. Lucidity is a practice — some nights it lands, some it doesn't, and consistency is what tips the odds in your favor.
